ART FOR FREEDOM

In Memory of Mahsa Amini

16.09.2024

Project created by: Vanessa Wenwieser and Tatiana Moura

This is a collective project to mark the second anniversary of the murder of Mahsa Amini by the morality police in Iran for not wearing the correct hijab according to government standards! Unfortunately, friends in Iran have reported that since the uprising and the high hopes we had for the women of Iran, things have not only gone back to normal, but even more oppressive! We hope that with our art we can remind people of the horrors and oppression that Iranian women face every day and support them, and hopefully by highlighting this we can make a difference, let them know that we care, and hopefully put pressure on our governments to take action!

Remember Me

I kneel before the world

My agonising death unveiled

Memories of my innocent life

Transcending the grief again

I was murdered for transgressions

Created by men to repress

Flowers grow on my body

You claim was undressed

I'm pleading for you

To remember my name

Mahsa Amini

Mahsa Amini

Remember my name

Two years looking for justice

The morality police enslaved

Murdering my feminine spirit

Beyond a physical reign

I was named after the moon

I was promised to the stars

Living in a “moral society “

Eclipsed behind bars

Nations of women oppressed

By shadows that hate

Fight back for your freedom

The sun shines to create

I'm pleading for you

To remember my name

Mahsa Amini

Unjustly murdered

In agony and pain

I plead with the nation

To plant flowers of hope

Let women be free from evil

Exploitation and ropes

I'm pleading for you

To remember my name

Mahsa Amini

Mahsa Amini

Unjustly murdered

Murderous Regimes

Born and raised in London
It's clear as day to see
Systemic racism within society
Checkin ID before declaring tragedy
Enslaved humanity
Living at half capacity
That advanced reality
Requires strength and bravery
The moral of all mythology
The truth's hiding in plain sight for you to see
Don't shy away from empathy

I feel the collective trauma
In my blood through my veins
Triggering my PTSD
And my rage
Since Mahsa's murder
No Iranian has been the same
45 years they've been putting our women
Through torture and pain
Tell me how can you find hope
When you see men hang from cranes
But turning a blind eye
You'd have to be inhumane

Heal the dualities within you
These binaries don't need to rule you
If you have no sympathy for human pain
The name of human you cannot retain
The name of human you cannot retain

There are days I look at my reflection
And I see the oppressor staring back at me
Those nights I go to sleep hoping that's the end of me
Between the person I am and the person I wanna be
Undeniable discrepancies
I'm harder on myself than you could ever be on me
Despite that, there's a life that I try to lead
Good thoughts, good thoughts
Good words, good words
Good deeds, good deeds

Trust me when I say
You aren't stuck in your ways
You're changing and evolving everyday
Ask yourself
If today were your last day
Could you take your last breath and be okay
Make the choice
To enhance your integrity
Which none of these world leaders
Seem to embody
You're all chatting about world peace
Mate, healing starts within
If you're not true to yourself
Is life even worth living
Years of therapy
I'm still not there
But we all know
This life ain't fair
We all know this life ain't fair

Heal the dualities within you
These binaries don't need to rule you
If you have no sympathy for human pain
The name of human you cannot retain
The name of human you cannot retain

When will we wake up and truly see
It's up to you and me
To overthrow power hungry murderous regimes
