International Women's Day is a date recognised by the UN, celebrated on March 8, and has its roots in the 20th century women's struggles for better working conditions, political rights and social equality. German activist Clara Zetkin was one of those responsible for making the date official, proposed in 1910 at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women.
Despite significant advances in recent decades, gender inequality is still a reality. Although we have made progress compared to the past, the numbers still show that gender equality is far from being achieved.
This year "Accelerate Action" is a call for urgency, inclusion, and transformative change. It signals that equality cannot wait, and that all sectors of society must work together to quicken the pace of progress for women’s rights and empowerment. It was not only Covid, that affected women disproportionately but also the oncoming swing of America as well as many European countries to the right, which sadly also affects women negatively as well as disproportionally.

International Women's Day, therefore, should not be treated just as a commemorative date, but rather as a moment of reflection and action.

Women's Day 2025
Why must I destroy my reflection
in order to succeed ?
Why do you want to control
every part of me ?
I am breaking barriers hard to define
I stand up for the oppressed
As you try to imprison my mind
Don't tell me how to live
Don't tell me what to think
Don't tell me how to dress
Don't tell me what to eat
Don't tell me how to behave
Don't tell me what to follow
Don't tell me how to choose
Don't tell me what to learn
Don't tell me who to love
Don't tell me who I am
Don't tell me what to do
I'm a woman who doesn't need be told
I am women who doesn't need your control
I am breaking the glass mirrors
That reflected your hold
I'm breaking barriers by telling
my story loud and bold
Why do I need to fight for myself
to have equality in this world ?
I will reclaim those pieces you
shattered within your command
There is strength in the gathering
to invigorate our dreams
There is strength in the gathering
of our art and connecting words
